Problems with the intervertebral disc are the more serious back problems that people can get and require expert attention to fix them to avoid the need for surgical intervention.
The stronger and more balanced a person’s muscles are around the spine the less likely they are to get disc problems. Disc problems usually accompany weakness in the area around the vertebrae because the weakness enables them to move and be tilted or twisted thereby pressuring the disc and creating a bulge, herniation or worse still, a complete rupture of the annulus or outer casing.
The symptoms associated with a disc bulge or worse are similar to sciatica in varying degrees of intensity depending on the amount of pressure on the disc. It is worth noting that there are studies which have been done that show various stages of degeneration or herniation of discs in subjects who have no associated pain. Therefore not every scan that shows up disc problems explains the pain a person may be feeling. It is worth keeping this in mind if a doctor wants to operate to correct the picture seen in a scan and assumes that will take away your pain.
Like other types of back pain, disc bulge, disc herniation and disc rupture all are products of what is going on in the rest of the body and the pressure being built up around the disc due to muscle imbalances. Treating these problems requires an understanding of how these muscle imbalances affect the body and an ability to be able to diagnose and correct them. If this is not done treatment will likely only achieve a temporary or no result.
Sometimes the pain associated with disc problems is so great it is very difficult for a person to be able to get to a therapy session on a regular basis because that involves sitting in a car to get there and back and any benefit obtained in the treatment is lost because of the discomfort in the travel. In this situation it is important a person uses good self treatment techniques, to enables them to improve their condition at home so they can travel comfortably and get the most out of their treatment.
Dealing with disc problems with stretching and exercise is not recommended as they will normally irritate the condition which is something you want to avoid at all costs. Sometimes the best initial treatment for disc bulge and disc herniation is rest in a position that doesn’t irritate the problem.Rest can often take the pain away to a point where you can get to treatment sessions and improve to a pain free condition. Trying to move around and do things with the pain is strongly advised against because it can make the pain much more intense and even turn a disc bulge into a disc herniation or at worst a complete rupture.
Any treatment for a disc problem in the acute phase should not include work on the disc itself but rather concentrate on removing tension and rebalancing the muscles in the rest of the body around the disc problem. A chiropractic adjustment should not be contemplated when the disc is in the acute phase and in my opinion is a questionable treatment at any time. For a better understanding of pain and problems associated with disc bulge, disc herniation or disc rupture, watch the free video showing you ‘a great way to get FAST back pain relief yourself at home’.
