The underlying cause of back problems for most people IS pressure building up in one or more of your joints as a result of having muscle imbalances while you are upright, carrying the weight of gravity
Take a moment to think about that statement because it is VERY IMPORTANT…
then I will explain exactly what it means …
A build up of pressure in one or more of your joints from having muscle imbalances… while you are carrying the weight of gravity (i.e. standing or sitting).
I think it will help if you have a look at some images while I explain it …
because it shows how the skeleton can be twisted or tilted causing every joint to end up out of alignment…
when the muscles on one side of your body are stronger or tighter than the same muscles on the other side.
This is how the body of a typical back or sciatic pain sufferer with muscle imbalances can look.
See how it looks quite different from one side to the other… carrying the weight of gravity in a very unbalanced way.
With the muscles struggling to hold itself up like this, it creates pressure spots in some key joints… mainly the lower spine and hips.
The arrows on the diagram show typical pressure spots that come when a pelvis tilts down on the right side for example.
These are areas that typically get irritated or inflamed as a result of this unbalanced body.
Muscle imbalances are extremely common in people who suffer from chronic back pain or sciatica, which basically means that…
the muscles on one side of your body support you differently to those on the other side.
Which means when you are in an upright position carrying the weight of gravity around, SOME muscles are working harder than they should while others are doing LESS work than they should be, causing your whole body to SAG or TILT. (see the images)
And that’s why pressure builds up on a joint, disc and in some cases irritates the nerve.
It’s a pretty simple concept to understand isn’t it? And from my perspective it’s entirely logical…
I see it and feel it in the body’s I treat every day!
But it’s a concept that the majority of doctors and other therapists are not applying to the treatment of back pain and sciatica patients they consult with …
As time goes by, this unbalanced state, causes the OVER worked muscles to become tight and inflexible…
…while the UNDER worked muscles become WEAK and dysfunctional.
…and CHRONICALLY WEAK and DYSFUNCTIONAL after a long period of time.

Have you noticed in conjunction with your back pain you feel heavy, sluggish and tired? …
Once this WEAKNESS starts to take over, the joints of the spine compress under your weight …and pressure can build up on the discs … causing NERVE PROBLEMS.
The BACK PAIN is the starting point as the muscles become unbalanced, and the SCIATICA arrives as the muscles become WEAK allowing the vertebrae to affect the disc and nerve.

And although the irritation is the end result of the pressure …. it is NOT the cause and I’m sure you can appreciate, dealing with just that doesn’t change the muscle imbalances or pressure spots …

You may have already been told you have ‘one leg shorter than the other’ and that’s a SURE sign……
OR you can get someone to help you and do the following:
Firstly lay down on your back on the floor and relax – letting your feet fall as they do …… then have a look where your feet are pointing.
Is one pointing out to the side and the other closer to straight up ? One falling at 10 o’clock and 12 o’clock? That tells you that your pelvis is TWISTED or ROTATED ……meaning your leg muscles SHOULD have been the first area worked on. OR have you had a scan and been told your problem is with your L5/ S1 joint ?… because that’s another pretty sure indication you have a rotated or twisted pelvis.
While you are still in the same position laying on the floor…… have your helper line up the prominent bones on the inside of your ankles – making sure your legs are straight. Do they line up perfectly? OR is there an obvious difference you can see in the leg lengths ? because if there IS an obvious difference, again it is a pretty sure indication… muscle imbalances are causing your pelvis to be tilted… which often leads to problems with your L4/ L5 Disc ……and again your leg muscles SHOULD have been one of the first areas worked on.
If you ARE dealing with an L4/ L5 or L5/ S1 disc bulge, in most cases surgery isn’t the solution… NOT if you want to deal with the cause and get lasting pain relief …… It may be required in certain circumstances BUT don’t let anyone tell you it is going to fix the cause of your problem.
If no one EVER worked on your leg muscles, then the treatment you were given probably only provided a short term benefit – AT BEST…and unfortunately it was most likely just a waste of your time and money …
I appreciate that THIS is probably NOT what you want to hear, and is perhaps quite frustrating… but I want to be honest with you, I am NOT here to sugar coat things and in fact I am sure YOU would prefer I didn’t …
SO if these little tests you’ve just done prove your pelvis is out …
OR the fact that you have ALREADY been told you have one leg shorter than the other ……
It’s confirmation that you DO in fact have muscle imbalances……and hopefully by now you have a good idea about the treatment you need to be receiving …
Along with a pretty good understanding of why you might STILL be in pain after already trying so many things …
Now if you’re wondering…WHY most doctors and therapists DON”T look at the body this way…and don’t consider muscle imbalances when discussing your back problem with you. I can’t give you that answer ……
