Title: explaining ct scan
Post by: macattack on February 24, 2010, 02:04:20 PM
Recently had a ct scan done after suffering from sciatica in my leg for months but do not fully understand the results. Grade 1/5 spondylolisthesis at L4/5 with marked degenerative change in the facet joints. There is spinal canal stenosis at this level and there is some encroachment onto the exit foramina for the nerve roots without compromise of the actual nerve roots themselves. My doctor told me I will probably need an operation down the track but not yet. He told me to take nurofen 3 times a day for inflammation and swelling and go back in 3 weeks if it is no better.

Hi Macattack,

The spondylolisthesis is a slipping forward or one vertebrae on the other at L4/ L5. The exit foramin is the chanel the nerve exiting the spinal canal comes out the side of the spine but it says there is no compromise of the nerve roots meaning the nerve is not being compressed. That may be because they did the scan lying down where the picture changes from when you are standing up.

The lumbar spinal canal is the space inside the lower spine that carries nerves to your legs. It is very narrow. The bone and tissue around it grow over the course of many years, causing the canal to become even more narrow. This narrowing is called "stenosis." As the lumbar spinal canal narrows, the nerves that go through it are squeezed. This squeezing may cause back pain, leg pain and weakness.

Arthritis, falls, accidents, and wear and tear on the spine's bones and joints can also cause lumbar spinal canal stenosis.

Basically all this means you have a messy structure at that level and the surgery they predict will be to clean it up. You may not be able to do much about that mess but you can take a lot of pressure from the area but getting your body around it more supple strong and BALANCED. If you do this you will starve off any further deterioration and should alleviate any pain you have. That is the aim of my self treatment program.

I hope that helps
