Title: A trip to hospital

Hi Steve,

Think I've worked out how to post now... so here goes.

I've been managing a back injury for 5 or so years...I curse that day I picked up a rock on the beach, felt something go click and lay under the beach shade for 8 hours unable to move.
The diagnosis is 2 bulging disks - L4 and L5. L5 also has a broad based herniation and indentation which is displacing the nerve sheath of S1.

I had a few days in hospital this week with excruciating sciatic pain - like a sharp burning rod inside my RH leg that left me unable to even turn over in bed. I passed out when I simply had to get up to go to the loo. 3 days complete rest and morphine got me out of that degree of pain. I am now standing at my computer instead of sitting - better than ball and kneel on chair. Driving is lousy. But pain much reduced. Future episodes like this scare the crap out of me. And as I have no health insurance, getting to even have a conversation with a surgeon about my options is a remote possibility.

Yesterday I began your SLM yoga DVD and started exercises for sciatic issues. I find I cannot hold any of the positions for nearly as long as directed in the DVD. 20 minutes in the wall sit??? You're kidding! Try 10 with a few rests. Figure I should just do my best....?

My question I guess is really about directions in therapy - keep going to the physio and doing core /pelvic floor and back muscle exercises AND your SLM /sciatic program? Thanks, Jacquie

Hi Jacquie,
I would focus on trying to do the water exercises and the SLM Yoga without the wall sit initially if it irritates you. If it doesn't then keep doing that part but try to stay 20 minutes but don't bend much at all so you get through it. The strength work with the core and pelvis floor exercises is risky if you are still in any pain as if you have a twist or tilt in your body these will make it just a stronger twist or tilt. Better to focus on getting the twist or tilt out before you strengthen.

Thanks for the advice Steve.
Will work on it. But not sure how I tell if I have a tilt or twist - although a guy I sometime see for deep muscle massage tells me my left leg ( I think.. ) is shorter than my right - pre-massage - but is the same length after a session with him. Does that give any clues?

It doesn't matter which Jacquie you treat them the same way with the SLM Yoga, water exercises and ball compressions.
