Sciatica mother of young children
« on: January 13, 2011, 12:54:44 AM »
Hi Steve, I'm a mother of three young children and I have been suffering from sciatia since my second pregnancy 2.5 years ago. The pain is radiating from my right hip all the way down the back of my right leg and it is particularly painful in the left hand middle part of my right foot. My right leg is also shorter than my left and I have very tight muscles around right hip area.

I have been to physio's and osteo's with no real help.

I bought your program and have been doing the exercises and ball work and have found it helpful but the sciatica pain is still there at present.

I have recently noticed that my whole right side seems to be contracted as for years now i have been regularly carrying my children on my left hip or arm and putting much more weight on this side (as this allows me to get things done with my right hand!).

Im wondering if there are exercises that i can focus on in my upper back, shoulder, even right arm area as it all seems particularly tight....

Also, i would love to get to a SLM therapist regularly for treatments but it is just not possible for me in this time of my life with a 4 month old baby and 2 toddlers and low funds......what do you recommend???

This is a tough Question as you have obviously put this into your body over a long period and so it is probably a complicated pattern to remove. Is it possible you can get 3  or 4 treatments from an experienced SLM therapist as this should at least get things on track and simplify it somewhat.

There are exercises in the blue book to work on your arms and shoulders and obviously you need to balance your hips where the right side is probably locked up.

Having this problem so long can also cause weakness in certain muscles and the treatment is the best way of handling that initially.

If you can send me a photo taken from behind in your bra and pants I will be able to advise you more accurately but not sure the extent of your problems from just your description.

Regards
Steve

Hi Steve, I took your advice and have been to see a SLM therapist who lives locally (which is amazing as I live a long way from the city)! Anyway, I've only had one visit so far but he said that my pelvis was tilted downwards, and then then the right leg was shorter than the left due to the pelvis being 'lifted' or sitter higher on the right side.

He found very tight muscles in stomach area (!!??), the hips obviously, but also particularly in my calves, and also in quads and adductors. He seems to believe that everything should be 100% treatable, which is good news.

I am not sure where all the imbalances have come in and can only assume from the pregnancies and carrying the babies around, but I am wondering if you treat many mothers with the same issues???

Cheers  :)

Yes I have treated lots of mums with problems and imbalances after having kids. You are not alone that's for sure.
