Hi Russell, The bulge is like a balloon with a air bulge in part of it and that often pushes on the nerve. The rupture is where the balloon has burst and the fluid inside the disc has leaked out and basically you no longer have a disc there.

A messy situation to say the least. Whether you can get by without surgery, the doctors will most likely say you cannot. I'd say it depends on too many things for me to say here.

All the best
Steve

Hi Steve,  Pity you are so far away - down-under!! Ok, so how are you today?  Brief history of me and my back first- I am 48 (female) and have had bad ME/CFS and Fibromyalgia for 10 yrs, badly and probably for many years before.  When I had my daughter my coxycx(?) was broken during her birth, ouch!! From then on I had back pain on and off.  I went on to do quite a lot of sport, gym (lifting heavy weights) swimming, cycling, running and walking. I also did a loft of lifting disabled folk and burned myself out totally! Then I got ME so spent about 3 years more or less bed/house bound.  Over the last year I have been a 'little' better, but suffer from terrible stress/pain and all associated symptoms and am unable to do any proper exericse/life, although, I have been doing physio stretches every morning before getting out of bed, a little on the exercise bike and minimal walking.  I always over-do 'life' and end up paying for it big time.  So basically my whole body particularly back is very sore and stiff, feel as if I'm about 80!!  About two weeks ago I develped a weird pulling, squeezing feeling and pains in my outer/inner upper thigh and in my groin, then my leg, mainly front of calf and it felt heavy with odd tingling burning  sensations which spread all over the place.  I actually rang the ER doc as I was really concerned that I had a DVT (still worry about that as both parents suffered from that and I have varicose veins and the circulation is not good).  So I guess that covers it, but it's not improving and in turn making the other probs worse as a result, I can't sleep on either side because my pelvis/leg feels odd and I don't sleep well because of the the fibromyagia anyway, so am doing less and am scared to death of returning to how I was a year ago!.  In the past I have been to doctors and Osteopaths etc and they only ended up hurting me even more.  I am desperate to improve my 'back and body' strengthen my muscles, but how when I have this illness.  What do you think about the weird groin back/thigh/leg pain.  It doesnt seem like sciatica from what I have read, but as it seemed to start in my groin, thigh and hip I really don't know or where to go for help? When you have ME etc nobody seems to know what to do with you, their eyes just glaze over!!.  I would add that last week deep in my groin there rreally was such a periodic pulling feeling that it really worried me, it has stopped now, felt a little like there was a tight elastic band tied around the top of my thigh, making it awkward to sit especially, easier when walking, but can't do that for long!!  As usual I have written an essay, so sorry about that!!  Would be grateful for any ideas you may have.  Many thanks!! Sally P>S> I am going to buy a couple of balls and try that!! Ta?quote author=Steve Lockhart link=topic=671.msg2127#msg2127 date=1241694623]
I am getting a lot of questions sent to my email inbox and when I answer them only one person gets the benefit. So I have decided to post them and my answer here so everyone can benefit from the information.

Thanks
Steve

Hi Sally,

Sorry for this late reply, I have had problems with my forum over the past 10 days because of my web host (webhost4life) moving my site to a new server and causing it to crash. They wonít be my webhost4life thatís for sure because there service to fix it has been terrible!

In respect to your problems:

For the coccyx to break during child birth it must have been under a lot of pressure to start with and that could have been a product of the years of nursing. Doing the sport with the imbalances would make the problem worse, plus add to any tissue trauma from the break to the coccyx.

You might have already read my theory on some ME cases where it is a result of an energy block in the body, again set up by pushing the body physically with muscle imbalances.

When your body is blocked and you canít do any physical exercise you end up becoming weak and that can be what leads to the groin pain developing. The tingling is probably from pressure on nerves in your lower back, again set up by the muscle imbalances tilting or rotating your pelvis. The way the leg joins the hip is out and combined with weakness you can get the painful groin symptoms.

It is a problem I am confident the SLM Bodywork could fix but I am guessing you are in an area where there is no therapist. I am confident the SLM Yoga would work well for you in conjunction with the ball compression work on the pressure points that I cover in my Self Treatment Program. At least you would be able to work on things each day at home and as toy improve perhaps see a good osteopath or deep tissue massage person whose treatment wouldnít knock you around so much then.

Good luck and be patient as your recovery will be slow and steady when you are on the right track.

All the best
Steve
