Should I be feeling some releif by now ??
« on: July 15, 2009, 03:23:20 PM »
Hi Steve,
I have seen a SLM therapist now for 2 treatments now and have been doing the SLM Yoga DVD 3 times a week for 2 weeks, however I am not feeling any relief from my left sided lower back pain. This pain wakes me all night and severly restricts my movement for the first 4 hours of the day. If anything the some of the yoga movements seem to aggrevate the pain (the movements where you are required to place your arms behind you and lean backwards).
My question is should I persist with the treatments and yoga or may this approach just not work for my pain.
Thanks

Hi Elaine,
The pain you describe is normally from a dysfunctional erector spinae muscle on the same side. You need to be doing the technqiue for that in the back pain guide and your therapist should be working on that also. I am not sure exactly what your body is like so can't really advise you but you should be asking that question of the SLM therapist you are seeing. Perhaps even suggest they speak to me if they are not confident about what they are doing and you progress. It is possible it will take more than a couple of weeks to get on top of this pain for you but you should be getting at least a day or two's relief each time you have it treated.

Regards
Steve

Thanks for answering me Steve. The therapist did say that I had very tight erector spinae muscles on both sides and has been targeting these but I get no relief from the back pain following the treatment and in fact the day after the treatment my pain is much worse.

That would indicate they are doing a poor job at releasing them Elaine. Muscles are easy enough to relax but trickier to release and if it is not done properly the symptoms are exactly as you describe.

Steve,
Before I start I just want to be clear that I am not whinging, I just want to know what to do to get rid of my lower back pain. As per below, I persisted with sessions with the SLM therapist from June last year until February this year - the result of each session has been the same, initially the pain is worse for one to two days then it settles back to it's ongoing chronic nature, I was advised to stop doing the SLM yoga sessions some time ago as this was aggreviating the pain. Of course I did discuss my lack of progress with the thearpist but now I have stopped going as nothing is improving and I feel I did give this a real chance to work. I have recently viewed your video link on back pain and would like to know whether the self help program has any possibility of helping me if sessions with a SLM therapist didn't help ?
Thanks

It is never good news when I hear that Elaine. I would say it is obvious that the therapist didn't focus on the right areas which is what happens when you feel worse for a couple of days then back to as you were. The SLM Yoga will never aggrivate the problem if you leave out the wall sit so when it does I always suggest people do it without the squats initailly.

I would appreciate it if you would let me know by private message which therapist you were seeing so I can recommend another that would be better and speak to them about referring questions to me when things don't go the way they should.

If you get the self treatment program and send me some photos I can give you advice about which things you should focus on and what to avoid.

All the best
Steve
