mechanical back pain???
« on: July 27, 2008, 07:59:11 AM »
i am new to the forum,i will try and keep it brief!
I herniated my L5 S1,3 years ago,i have had an epidural that gave me 50% relief in pain,18 mths ago.I have back pain right sided,i walk with a limp and feel lack of power in the lower back.I cant run and find walking tiring. It hurts to sit and drive and i get alot of pain when i lay down.
Now they want me to have another epidural followed by a course of physio?.
I dont have any faith in the above treatment working, after 3 years.
I have seen a neuro surgeon n he wont operate.
Is it mechanical back pain like they say now,or do i push to see an Orthopeadic consultant.
I am dispondant, confused and fed up.
Any advice or similar stories would be good.

Hi Justine,
This is a common problem (lower back pain one side) and you are certainly not alone as a sufferer. It is caused by the erector spinae muscles on that side becomming dysfunctional and not doing their job of erecting the spine. Surgery is totally the wrong choice of treatment because you need to reactivate these muscles and the pain will go away fairly quickly. I have some techniques I suggest in my self treatment program for this with a tennis or solid rubber ball and there are a few other you can do as well. If you are interested in looking at that go here,

Otherwise find a therapist who agrees with this approach and knows how to reactivate dysfunctional muscles without trying to use stretches and exercise because they wont work either.

Good luck.
