4 years of chronic pain and counting
« on: March 15, 2009, 09:29:16 PM »
Hi Steve

My back pain started 4 years ago after lifting something heavy and herniating adisc in my lower back.
After various MRI's, Bone scans etc. The result by my specialist is a 3 level fusion which only gives me 30% chance of it working for me or live with the pain!
Well i am trying to live with the pain.

I have had accupunture and loads of physio which has resulted in a slight improvement in my leg and buttock pain but not my actual back pain. I have tried swimming too but that's agony.
I carn't lie on my left side or my back to sleep and my right side hurts from always favouring it.
After a recent Decompression i have gone back to work but it's agony!
It hurts all day and when i get home it locks up and i have to sit with a hot water bottle and take a handful of meds to at least get the pain manageable.
I have tried opiate based meds but they don't touch my pain and who wants to down god knows how many tablets a day just to get through every day.

I am at the stage where i have accepted i am going to be in pain everyday but if there is something out there that will help me lead a "normal" life then i'm game.

Thanks for listening.

Hi Sherry,
You probably have some weak muscles and imbalances to deal with but I understand it can be difficult when you are in so much pain. My self treatment prgram has lots of options for exercises and self accurpessure/ massage with a rubber ball. Trying to unlock your body and use the SLM Yoga to get strength and balance back is the only way I would suggest if you can't come in for treatment first. www.backpain.com.au/help

Good luck,
Regards
Steve

At what point is something considered "chronic"? Ive had back problems for years but usually it would only act up for a few weeks a year. The last year or so its been more consistant. Hurts every day, not quite as bad as the old flare-ups, but always there.
Ive tried Physical therapy a little but mostly take the pain meds at night and try to keep somewhat active so I dont "freeze up".

After 6 months with a problem it is classed as chronic. It gets worse because the lack of circulation that is associated with it causes a slow weakness and deterioration to take place. You need to fix it and get the circulation working properly again and sort out the dysfunctional muscles sooner rather than later or it becomes very difficult for the average therapist to fix.

Steve.

A friend of mine had a chronic pain for a long time.  He was diagnosed with Fibromylagia, a stabbing pain in neck and shoulders and of whole spine paining. He undergone  treatment  with several chiropractors but none of the things really worked. He struggled with the pain for almost 1yr.  Finally he was referred to pain treatment programs by experienced physical therapist. And now he is completely relieved from the horrible pains. You can try them to see if they help.
