DISC BULGE- SEVERE PAIN.. SURGERY RECOMMENDED
« on: October 26, 2010, 04:01:57 PM »
Hi. I am suffering from low back pain for last three years. let me sum my conditions first. I have exteremly pronated flat feet, my left is more pronated compared to the right. for last two years i had numbness in my left leg straight from my hip to the toe and my left knee cap is kind of locked and i m restricted to walk in stairs or any elevated palce. Recently i started to get extreme pain on the hips and i havent felt my glute muscles worked for couple of years.
I have had regular healing sessions with chiro, physio... and a physical trainer who specialize in postures but i dont see any improvement rather it has got worse...

can u suggest me anything to overcome this

thanks

Hi Jey, Getting muscles functional again and the body balanced so those muscles get activated and work the right way when you move is what I do and it sounds to me like this is what is not happened at the moment.

The problem with Physio is it only focuses on a part of the body at a time, whether it be the glutes, the knee or the feet. If you are not doing everything together it doesn't work and with the way a physio works they don't have the time to do everything together.

With chiropractic, it doesn't do enough muscle work. Adjusting the bones and joints is fine for a bit of temporary aligment but without detailed muscle work it doesn't hold.

With a personal trainer they need the muscles to be functional to respond to what they are trying to do and there is a point in the path of deterioration that the muscles get to where they no longer respond to the exercises they are being given. It sounds like yours have reached that point.

I expect from what you say that you need orthotics for your feet but again sometimes it is best to get your body balanced and muscles working properly before you have them fitted. They are expensive and you want the picture they are looking at when fitting them to be as good as it can be, so you get ones that work for you.

In summary I would say there is an important step you need to do before you get the orthotics and see the personal trainer and that is get your muscles all working properly again and your body balanced. An SLM therapist is trained to do that for you, a physio or chiropractor isn't. They may think they are but believe me they won't do it.

Hopefully you will be near an SLM therapist but if not my self treatment program will guide you through it, using what resources and therapists you have available.

I hope that has cleared up a bit of the confusion for you.

Regards
Steve

Hi Steve
Thanks for your reply. I got my orthotics last year from one of the posture clinic in melbourne but thing is its worse now. Now its got to the stage where I cant get up with both of my feet and i dont feel the whole left side starting from the hips to the feet and some times if i try to walk faster or move quicker my left knee is like its getting loose and going down.

As u said i would see the SLM therapist and see how it goes but even if that doesnt do any good i would beg any surgeon to do a surgery.
This whole thing is pulling my life back.
anyway thanks for this forum and thanks for ur advice.

I am sorry to hear that Jay. Sometimes the patterns are difficult to read especially for the less experienced therapists. It is important you work on things in the right order but easy to muck that up a little.

The patterns of imbalance are what cause pressure on the disc is the lower back and from the sounds of it that pressure has increased which would indicate the therapist has taken away your body defensive compensation rather than dealing with the key muscle dysfunctions.

Your options are to try someone else, or continue with the person you saw and I will pass on some suggestions. or come to the Gold Coast and see me.

I am not sure who you saw but some cases are too difficult for the less experienced therapists and you may be one of those. How long ago did you get your last treatment because you should wait at least a couple of days to let things settle.

Did the therapist spend a lot of time on your leg muscles as I think your case would have needed that.

Thanks steve...

yes he did more work on my leg muscles.. i visited him on every thursdays. the muscles were very very tight before but now its more relaxed but the pain is bit severe than before and i am afraid that im getting that pain on my right side aswell.
a month back i am so regular to gym and workout with the pain.. but the pain would ease after some time i've been doing that for last one yr .. but after taking rest for last one month the pain and numbness actually got worse. i got a stong feeling that my hip bones were not in the right place coz the way i walk now was completely different.

for last two weeks i couldnt bend down.... but before i could, even with the pain i was able to bend down  but now the left leg is not bending and it seems that i m out of control of my left leg coz whenever i try to bend down i struggle a lot thinking wht should i do to my left leg to bend me down.....

I am more happy to try another therapist.. could you pls suggest someone who would be more experienced.

Thanks

jay

Hi Jay, The tightness actually holds everything together and can reduce your pain somewhat. When you are loosened up it can allow more movement around the irritated vertebrae and disc, it sounds like this might have happened to you. This is why the pain gets worse. If the original therapist has already done lots of leg work perhaps it is because they haven't done enough deep release on the erector spinae muscles and they are acting on you more now.

I will ask Wayne to read this post before treating you as there is not too much more advice I can give him when I haven't treated you yet myself and so don't know your body too well.

Regards
Steve
