The aim of the Bad Back Book is to give you an insight into how you can go about fixing your back pain. It covers a brief summary of everything I have learnt in nearly 20 years of full time practice in my SLM Bodywork clinic. 

During that time nearly every case you could possibly imagine has walked through my door and although what I do certainly doesn’t work for everybody, the majority of people who come in, left without pain or with a lot more hope and direction on how to get pain free.

The common denominator in the people who have the most stubborn problems is they have a body that is tight and stressed for all of the reasons I have already spoken about earlier in the book.

If someone comes in with a relatively healthy body and is motivated to co operate for as long as is necessary, and that could be as long as 6 months, the chances of them getting rid of their pain for good is very high. That includes people who have been everywhere and tried everything else with little or no success.

There is always a good reason why people have back pain and it is not rocket science. I feel that many specialists over complicate things far too much and in doing so miss the obvious causes.

I sincerely believe that with the right advice and effort on your part, using the same logic and approach that I have for all these years, you can be pain free again.

Now I am sure there are people reading this who consider themselves to be so bad they are beyond help of this nature. People who have been taking medication for many years for nerve pain that just doesn’t let up, or perhaps on social security or a pension because they can’t work due to the intensity of their back pain.

I would not exclude them from being able to improve using the same approach for one minute, I’ve seen it happen many times. The important thing is to put everything in the right order.

Obviously when you are in a very bad way you can’t jump straight into exercises or you will just irritate your pain, first you have to settle the inflamed tissue and build some strength into your body and you can do this best with nutrition.

Detoxing your body and feeding it with the best diet possible will settle the nerves and tissue stress and make it much more likely that you will respond to gentle strengthening work which is the next thing you need to do, using isometric exercises.

It is so important your muscle system supports your frame properly so that the joints, nerves and disc are not under pressure when you are on your feet. If you can get to a point where you can lie down and relieve your pain you can do some isometric exercises in the same position to get your strength to start increasing. This is exactly what my SLM Yoga workout does. About 60% of it is done lying flat on your back on the floor and will build a level of strength and suppleness into your muscles that should get you on your feet pain free.

I had a patient come in to see me who had a badly ruptured disc in his lower back and was flat on his back taking medication for 6 weeks before coming in......
