Upper back pain
« on: January 22, 2010, 10:03:28 am »

HI Steve,

I had problem with my lower back (L4-L5 and L5-S1 levels), I am doing exercises for this problem. But recently I started getting pain in my upper back (between the shoulder blades and near the shoulder joints), I was reading information on your website, came to know that it may be related to my lower back problem.

I live in Sweden, I want to buy the self treatment program. I have a few questions related to it. May I know if this problem can be cured by yoga and body massage?

Is the upper back problem also well covered in the self treatment program?

Thanks,
Chaitanya

According to me I personally feels that yoga is the best exercise to heal all your pains and other problems, you just need to be little focus on doing it.

I must say that be concerned about your pains and dont need to worry at all, also try to balance your posture too. There can be lot of other medications that you can take for prevention of such pain like you can go for physiotherapy, Tens unit which really serves you better.

Thanks

Many people believe that rest is best for a painful back, but actually, what your back really needs when itís hurt is exercise. Regular exercise relieves back pain by strengthening and stretching the muscles that support the spine and helps to prevent future injury Studies have shown that yoga is the number one most effective exercise for relieving back pain. However, not all yoga poses relieve back pain, and some can in fact aggravate existing pain, so it is important to know which poses will be most helpful in relieving back pain. It is best to do these exercises under the supervision of a certified yoga instructor, and if you encounter any problems with these poses, you should consult an expert.

Thanks for your well meaning comments Robin but there is some bad advice here that needs comment.

Back pain is rarely fixed with exercise because most back pain is caused by muscle imbalance and exercise doesn't correct this, it only strengthens it and makes it more permanent.

Most back pain sufferers don't suffer from weakness so exercise is best left until after you get your muscles rebalanced.

Similarily stretching or normal yoga is not a solution for back pain because it consists largely of stretching and exercise and as stated if muscles are unbalanced or dysfunctional these two thing have no positive affect on them. The best yoga can offer is temporary relief.

The fact remains that if yoga worked to fix back pain it wouldn't be a growing epidemic as it is and people like me wouldn't need to devote a website and forum to it to advise people on their best course of action.

It is easy to make the statement, 'consult an expert' but the fact is there are very few true back pain experts around because most who claim they are only teat symptoms and offer short term results if that, for too much money.
