Question about Australian medical system?

As you guys know, here in the US (I live in Royal Oak, Michigan, to be exact), we have to pay for our medical care. Due to the economy I've been unemployed and without medical insurance, and of course I don't qualify for assistance (you have to be practically homeless for that).

Anyway, a month ago I had a freak accident -- I tripped and fell on the sidewalk and cut open my chin! Thinking I could close up the wound myself, I waited five days before I finally went to the doctor (my dermatologist down the street). My wound was infected and the doctor had to re-cut my chin before giving me five stitches along with oral antibiotics. It cost $130.

My question is -- if this had happened in Australia, would I have been able to see a doctor right away, let alone a dermatologist (she did a VERY good job stitching it up, probably better than a regular doctor)? Would I have had to pay anything?

I know I should have gone to the doctor right away, but the cost of the whole thing is what kept me from going. I'm just lucky I won't have too bad of a scar.
