NEED HELP

Hi,

My wife is currently in Greenslopes Hospital with extreme lower back back after being diagnosed with a prolapsed L5. Unfortunately after intense physio and chiro which did bring relief intially she slowly deteoriated to the point where should could no longer get out of bed. This was also made worse by the fact she is allergic to the pain medication normally prescribed for pain relief. A couple of months ago she was given two options: 6 weeks rest or surgeory. Since this had been going on for some time we took the option of surgeory which lead to the removal of the cartlidge thus releaving pressure on the nerve. Unfortunately after a few weeks of relief she is back where she started. Now the surgeon is talking FUSION. Now I've googled this and this can either be the miracle cure or a sentence to a lifetime of pain 10 times worse than she is experiencing now. This concerns the hell out of me as she is already in so much pain I don't think she would cope if the pain was any worse.

I need help and advice on alternatives to help my wife get back to some normality. She says her pain level is about 8/10 but can live with 5/10. What can I do to help her ???

Thanks
Kevin

Hi Kevin, surgery and fusions only treat symptoms not the underlying cause of back pain which is muscle imbalances causing the body's frame to twist and sag. If the surgery didn't work and the pain came back then it's unlikely the fusion will work either.

I suggest you bring her to see me on the Gold Coast where I will remove the muscle imbalances and stabilise her joints the right way that will last. Hopefully the surgery hasn't already done irrepairable damage.

All the best
Steve
